Background: To expose how asylums abused women, journalist Nellie Bly had herself committed to one. In 1887she faked insanity to get inside a New York asylum, then wrote Ten Days in a Mad-House, her explosive report on the cruelty she witnessed. Her work forced reforms and helped invent modern undercover journalism. Two years later she raced around the world in seventy-two days, beating the fictional record from Around the World in Eighty Days.
