In an era of influencers and self-indulgence, the themes of Patience hit home, hilariously

June 12–21, 2026 | MAC Theatre, Austin, Texas

Fans of the works of W.S. Gilbert & Arthur Sullivan will tell you that while the comic opera Patience might be a lesser-known title, it packs an unmistakable punch that delights time and time again. Whether you’re a seasoned “Savoyard” or a curious newcomer, Patience supplies plenty of laughs, swoons, and queries on the value of what’s aesthetically in – and what’s out.

And in our current era of arguable self-indulgence, Gilbert & Sullivan’s 19th-century commentary on the importance of being interesting hits home even harder, in the most toe-tapping, laugh out loud way.

Between June 12–21, 2026, at the centrally-located MAC Theatre in Austin, audiences will have seven (7) chances to peer into a topsy-turvy world of fawning maidens, melodramatic poets, and one refreshingly sensible milkmaid named Patience, caught in the middle of it all.

“At its core, Patience is a show about what happens when the need to be seen, admired, and followed drowns out the quieter, harder business of being authentic,” says returning Stage Director Carol Brown. “If that sounds familiar, it should. [Lyricist] Gilbert was writing about influencer culture a century and a half before anyone had a follower count.”

With more than 25 local singing-actors on stage, Patience plays like a classic musical with heart – complete with big chorus numbers, hummable melodies, and the strength of a full orchestra, led by Jeffrey Jones-Ragona in his 20th year as GSA’s Music Director.

After all, in a world obsessed with appearances, Patience reminds us that sincerity never goes out of style. And as Brown says, “It’s incredibly funny, and beautifully effective.”
