The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
by Georgetown Palace Theatre

Oct. 03 - Nov. 02, 2014

The ever-popular stage musical, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, opens the 2014-15 season for the Historic Palace Theatre in Georgetown with a 5-weekend run from October 3 to November 2.  With book by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson and music and lyrics by Carol Hall, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is based on a story by King that was inspired by the real-life “Chicken Ranch” in La Grange, Texas.  Artistic Director Mary Ellen Butler selected this enduring favorite as the season opener due to its popularity in 2008 on the Palace’s Springer Memorial Stage.  Ron Watson, on staff as the Palace’s Technical Director, brings his experience and skill as Director to this production; the talented Jesee Smart provides the Choreography; and the actors, singers, dancers, musicians, designers, assistants, stagehands, and everyone else required to put on this lavish production come to the Palace from all over Central Texas!

This hilarious story of small town vice and statewide political side-stepping recounts the good times and the demise of “The Chicken Ranch” located outside of fictional Gilbert, Texas, in the late 1970s.  A brothel that has been operating for more than a century is under the proprietorship of Miss Mona Stangley.  Governors, senators, mayors, and even victorious college football teams frequent Miss Mona’s cozy bordello.  While taking care of her girls, Miss Mona is also on good terms with the local Sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd.  When crusading television reporter Melvin P. Thorpe (based on real-life Houston news personality Marvin Zindler) decides to make the illegal activity an issue, political ramifications cause the place to be closed down.  But before they close the bordello doors permanently, be ready for some Texas drawl, a lot of high-stepping dance, songs both poignant and risqué, and the bewitching Miss Mona with her beautiful girls! RECOMMENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES.
