Esther the Clever Queen

(via Congregation Agudas Achim)Just in time for the Jewish festival of Purim comes a Gilbert and Sullivan-inspired musical of the Book of Esther.  With music selections from Pirates of Penzance, the Mikado, Ruddigore, HMS Pinafore and Princess Ida, the original libretto tells the story of how the lovely Esther and her uncle Mordecai foil the plans for the destruction of the Jews of Persia by the dastardly Haman. Audience members will hear Mordecai assert, “I am the very model of a sage and Jewish patriarch,” and Esther warble, “a frum little maid from shul I be.” Esther’s influence over King Ahashueros is portrayed in full rom-com style that turns serious when the king appoints Haman as the Grand Vizier.

Coming a few days before the megillah reading, the performance provides an opportunity for the entire Austin Jewish community to come together to celebrate.  It will also provide outreach to the Austin community, including those who love all things Gilbert & Sullivan and those who love all things biblical.
