Thoroughly Modern Millie
by Leander High School Theatre

Jan. 24 - Jan. 27, 2019
Thursday-Sunday

Based on the blockbuster 1967 film starring Julie Andrews, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE focuses on a plucky, independent young woman who finds herself in the midst of a series of madcap adventures when she sets her sights on marrying her wealthy boss. Set against the backdrop of 1920s Manhattan, the musical features an infectious jazz score comprised of original songs by Jeanine Tesori (Tony Award Winner, Fun Home; Tony Award Nominee, Thoroughly Modern Millie) and popular tunes by Victor Herbert, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Tchaikovsky. The original 2002 Broadway production of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE ran for 903 performances and earned an impressive 11 Tony Award nominations, winning 6, including Best Choreography, Best Actress, and Best Musical.

Leander High School’s production will feature a cast of nearly 40 students, including Greater Austin High School Musical Theatre Award nominees Caroline Holmes as Millie Dillmount and Jordan Williams as Jimmy Smith.

Unlike other productions of the show, Leander High School’s production will also include the 1921 silent film documentary Manhatta. The film--which includes the poetry of Walt Whitman accompanied by George Gershwin’s “Second Rhapsody”--celebrates the Manhattan of the Jazz Age through a series of sweeping shots of everything from the Staten Island ferry to the iconic Manhattan skyline. Manhattawill be presented approximately 15 minutes before each performance.
