As You Like It

As You Like It follows the intrepid Rosalind through the Forest of Arden, as love notes, mistaken identity, music, and laughter enliven her quest for her father and her true love, Orlando. This pastoral favorite considers what a world of constancy, love, and reconciliation can look like when it is beset with injustice, jealousy, and fear.

The summer class of Shakespeare at WInedale will conclude their tour with a performance of King Lear at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia on Monday, August 28th at 7:30PM. In addition to sharing their work with the Shenandoah Valley on this stunningly unique stage, students will also have the opportunity to participate in workshops with American Shakespeare Center company members as well as soak up professional performances such as Much Ado About Nothing, Love’s Labour’s Lost, and Henry VI, Part 3.  http://americanshakespearecenter.com/

“This has been an epic season for Shakespeare at Winedale,” said program director James Loehlin, Shakespeare at Winedale Regents Professor of English and University Distinguished Teaching Professor. “We are performing three of Shakespeare’s very greatest plays. As You Like It is the perfect Winedale comedy, with its atmosphere of pastoral and celebration. Antony and Cleopatra is an epic romance filled with soaring poetry and world-changing events. And King Lear, a soul-shaking tragedy, is perhaps Shakespeare’s highest achievement.”

Shakespeare at Winedale is a University of Texas program in which students study and perform Shakespeare at the Winedale Historical Complex near Round Top. Since its founding by English professor James Ayres in 1970, the program’s unique, hands-on approach has brought Shakespeare’s words to life for hundreds of students and thousands of audience members. University students from many disciplines and backgrounds work together for six weeks at Winedale, ending their summer with four weekends of performances in a converted nineteenth-century hay barn.
