Waiting for Lefty
by Street Corner Arts

Dec. 05 - Dec. 20, 2014

Fresh on the heels of receiving its 501(c)(3) non-profit status, Street Corner Arts continues its mission to bring Austin audiences relevant, engaging theatre from all genres and eras, this time around with the American classic WAITING FOR LEFTY by Clifford Odets. A seminal work by Odets and instrumental in ushering the influential Group Theatre into America’s artistic consciousness, LEFTY serves as a prime example of agitprop theatre. Though its themes reflected the societal conflicts of its time, especially those surrounding income-inequality, LEFTY even today continues to be pertinent in the acidic, socio-political environment in which we still find ourselves.

>"A hard-hitting and gut-wrenching gem of an ensemble piece that captivates the audience while stunning them with ugly truths that still exist. Written by Clifford Odets in 1935, it studies the rights of workers to receive fair compensation for an honest day’s work. Hearkening back to an era when the birth of labor organizations was marked by violence and unbridled chicanery, Clifford Odets’ groundbreaking treatise on societal inequities remains as timely during America’s current economic crisis.”   -- Backstage
