Hamlet
by Rosedale Shakespeare

May. 22 - Jun. 07, 2014

Shake out your picnic blankets for a night of Shakespeare under the stars! Something for Nothing Theater (S4N) returns to Ramsey Park (4301 Rosedale Ave, Austin, TX 78756) with William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Marking the company’s third annual production of a community-friendly Shakespearean play at Ramsey Park, Hamlet will be performed with minimal props, costumes, and lighting, focusing on storytelling and the rich language of Shakespeare. Performed by a cast of 9 actors, each portraying multiple roles, Hamlet concludes at a brisk two hours. Featured in the cast are Jon Cook as Hamlet, Matt Fitzgerald as Claudius and Ghost, Leanna Holmquist, Eric McClellan, Hannah Adrian, Brooks Naylor, Bradley Wright, Lindsay McKenna, and Griffen McDonald. Artistic Director is Chelsea Bunn.

Considered one of the most influential and compelling dramas in English literature, Hamlet tells the story of a young prince, Hamlet, who is prompted by his father’s ghost to seek revenge on his uncle, Claudius, his father’s murderer and successor to the throne of Denmark. Hamlet decides to feign madness to avert detection by his uncle. Uncertain of the Ghost’s authenticity, Hamlet organizes a play to discover the conscience of his uncle, King Claudius. Fearful of his nephew’s intentions, King Claudius incites Laertes, the son of his advisor, Polonius, to a fencing match with Hamlet. Laertes, who is convinced that Hamlet is responsible for the deaths of his father and his sister Ophelia, puts lethal poison on his sword before the fight. In the final moments of the play, fate decides the destiny of all concerned.

“Something for Nothing Theater discovers all performances through the creative act of play,” said Artistic Director Chelsea Bunn. “We’re excited to explore this powerful play through our collaborative process, and present our first Shakespearean tragedy at Ramsey Park.” Chelsea Bunn has directed all Something for Nothing Theater productions, including Two Gentlemen of Verona in 2013, which featured adoptable dogs from Austin Dog Rescue as Crab the dog, and The Comedy of Errors in 2012.
