House of India by Deepak Kumar is an award-winning play that premiered at the Old Globe in San Diego in 2025. This year, Leela - An Indian Community Theatre is proud to present the Texas premiere of this heart-warming dramedy in English.
 
In memory of her late husband, Ananya runs “House of India,” the last remaining restaurant in a once-flourishing Asian strip mall outside of Cleveland. All around her are pressures to change – from her finances, from her kids, and most persistently, from Jacob, a Thai-American entrepreneur (and current cook at the restaurant) who is determined to convert the traditional restaurant into a nationwide fast-casual Indo-fusion franchise. When things come to a head, Ananya must make a choice: give up on her husband’s “American dream” and close up shop, or compromise on her values to stay afloat? A play about South Indian food, familial expectations, and figuring out what really makes a “House” a home.
 
 

This award-winning play is a heart-warming, relatable story about family, food, identity, and belonging. It follows Ananya and her family as they navigate the tensions between honoring their heritage and adapting to a new world—all set against the backdrop of their family-owned Indian restaurant.If you've ever felt caught between two worlds, or watched someone you love struggle with that tension, this play speaks to you. It's funny, heartbreaking, and deeply human. Deepak Kumar has crafted something that brings us together through laughter, nostalgia, and the kind of conversations we all need to have.

Our journey with this story began two years ago when Leela - An Indian Community Theatre did a staged reading of the play in collaboration with City Theatre. Many of you attended the event, loved the story and have been asking us ever since about when we will be doing the full production. Well, we are finally here! Last year, the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego featured the world premiere of the show, and this year, we are bringing it to Texas. We invite you to join us for this special, one-day ONLY event.
