Las Comadres de Morales Street
by Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center
Nov. 12 - Nov. 22
Thursdays-Sundays

Set in San Antonio’s Westside, the play follows a tight-knit group of neighbors whose lives are intertwined by friendship, family, and the everyday fight to hold on to their community. With humor, heart, and honesty, the story tackles Covid, gentrification, and years of disinvestment, while centering on the strength of elders, comadres, and familia.
Director Ruby Ruiz is thrilled to welcome audiences back. “We’ve brought together an incredible cast and production team, and I’m so excited to bring this show back to the community that showed it so much love the first time around,” she says.
Chavez, whose work has been featured at Seniors in Play, Jump-Start Theater and the historic Guadalupe Theater in productions like “Chato’s Bridge” and “Petra’s Pecado,” blends her artistic background with an MBA from St. Mary’s University to tell stories that are both grounded and deeply affecting. “I’m grateful to the Guadalupe for this opportunity to elevate the stories of our elders and celebrate community,” Chavez says. "The play is my love letter to the Westside," said Chavez. "While working with Seniors in Play, I was inspired by our elders' stories of resilience and so "Las Comadres" was born."
Jorge Piña, director of the Guadalupe’s Theater Arts Program, adds, “Irene’s voice is vital in today’s landscape. ‘Las Comadres de Morales St.’ invites us to reflect on our shared humanity while honoring the beauty, humor, and struggle that define our neighborhoods.”
Because the historic Guadalupe Theater is temporarily closed for major renovations, this remount will take place at the SAY Sí Black Box Theater on the Westside, keeping the show close to the community that inspired it.
A reception honoring the playwright, director, and cast members will follow the opening performance.
This production of Las Comadres de Morales St. is made possible in part through the generous support of the City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture, San Antonio Area Foundation and Texas Commission on the Arts.
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center was founded in 1980 as a nonprofit, multi-disciplinary organization. Located in the heart of San Antonio’s westside, the Guadalupe is one of the largest community-based organizations in the US with the mission to cultivate, promote and preserve traditional and contemporary Chicano, Latino and Native American arts and culture through multidisciplinary programming.
