Heidi Holland, a successful art historian, navigates various social and political issues in the United States from the 1960s to the 1980s. While she achieves professional success, she grapples with the sacrifices required to achieve it, including the loss of meaningful relationships and the struggle to balance work and motherhood while finding her own voice and place in a rapidly changing world.

The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein was first produced in 1988.
