FuturX 2020
by The Vortex

Nov. 06 - Nov. 21, 2020

For three weekends, November 6-21, 2020, The VORTEX, Teatro Vivo, ProyectoTEATRO, and Avante Theatre Project present our third annual FuturX Festival of new and avant-garde LatinX performance. This 3-weekend Festival celebrates the many permutations and intersections of LatinX identity in the 21st Century and beyond, featuring work that dives deep into the complexities of LatinX identity.

This year, we will gather virtually in an interactive online LABERINTO where audiences can wander from room to room to experience Loteria fortune telling, life coaching sessions, burlesque performances, magic rituals, divine tias, DJ sessions, late night ride shares and more from artists whose Latinidad is queer, trans, feminist, Afrolatinx and indigenous. On November 20th and 21st, we will feature an additional online broadcast at 9pm of new work from ProyectoTEATRO exploring and critiquing Jose Vasconcelos’ “Raza Cosmica.”

On November 20th and 21st, we will feature our flagship event: an online broadcast at 9pm of new work from ProyectoTEATRO exploring and critiquing José Vasconcelos’ “Raza Cosmica.”

FuturX Festival is curated by Rudy Ramirez, Artistic Director of Avante Theatre Project and Associate Artistic Director of The VORTEX. Ramirez has received 5 B. Iden Payne Awards for Outstanding Direction and was named Best Director in the 2017 The Austin Chronicle Readers’ Poll. He works with numerous companies, staging work at the Southwestern University, Emma S. He has achieved national recognition as a finalist for the 2015 NNPN Director’s Fellowship and the 2018 TCG Alan Schneider Award. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Directing at University at Massachusetts at Amherst.

ProyectoTEATRO will premiere Raza Cosmica (working title) live on stage at The VORTEX as part of the Festival. ProyectoTEATRO serves as a cultural organization and a social project with the mission of promoting and preserving Latin American culture through the arts in Spanish. ProyectoTEATRO’'s vision is to make the arts accessible to the entire community, with a focus on the Latino population, in order to reduce the sociocultural differences of today's society. “We do theater because life is not enough”.

Teatro Vivo is dedicated to producing quality bilingual theater accessible to all theater audiences and artists.  Teatro Vivo reflects the heart and soul of the Latino reality by opening a unique window for all to share in this experience. Inspired by the power of theater to educate and entertain, Teatro Vivo produces and promotes Latino theater that showcases the Latino experience, accessible to all audiences, especially those underserved by the arts.

The VORTEX has advanced cutting-edge theatre in Austin for over 30 years by conjuring urgent, unashamed art to create action in a shifting age, embracing diverse communities, breaking down barriers, and elevating inclusive discourse from our home in Austin, Texas. The VORTEX enlivens humanity with magical green new theatre at The Butterfly Bar and Sanctuary. The VORTEX’s art reflects diversity of people and voices from the global majority and honors sustainability and environmentalism.

Avante Theatre Project was founded by Rudy Ramirez in 2018 to develop, produce and promote new and avant-garde work by Latinx artists that celebrates the complexities, contradictions and intersections of Latinidad. Avante has produced the FuturX Festival for three years and will develop three new plays based on the works of Federico Garcia Lorca through an artist residency with Fusebox and Texas Performing Arts.
