The City Theatre is about to ROCK IT OUT!! Presenting The Who’s Tommy, the rock ‘n’ roll musical sensation that has been years in the making at the little east side venue. Directed by resident theatre director Jeff Hinkle.

Ever since I was a young boy…

The Who’s Tommy is a sensory-defying rock and roll experience. Based on the iconic 1969 rock concept album, it is an exhilarating story of hope, healing, and the human spirit. After witnessing the accidental murder of his mother's lover by his father, Tommy is traumatized into catatonia and, as the boy grows, he suffers abuse at the hands of his sadistic relatives and neighbors. As an adolescent, he's discovered to have an uncanny knack for playing pinball and, when his mother finally breaks through to him, he becomes an international pinball superstar. The story of the pinball-playing, deaf, dumb, and blind boy who triumphs over his adversities has inspired and amazed audiences for more than 40 years. Translated to the stage by Des McAnuff, this five-time Tony Award-winning musical is a high-energy, one-of-a-kind theatrical event and features an exhilarating score that has made it a smash-hit around the world.

SEE ME  FEEL ME   TOUCH ME  HEAL ME.

Tommy History. Inspiration for The Who's Tommy was drawn directly from the 1969 concept album, Tommy by the legendary rock band, The Who. The work was the first album in history to be billed overtly as a rock opera and, in its original release, rocketed the band from somewhat-known single artists into what is now regarded as one of the best and best-known rock bands of all time. The album has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and, before being devised as a musical, was also the basis for a 1975 film of the same name. It first premiered on Broadway at the historic St. James Theatre, April 22, 1993. Acclaimed director, Des McAnuff, and Pete Townshend sculpted the kaleidoscopic concept album by Townshend's former band, The Who into a stage show with a lasting story. It went on to win five Tony Awards including Best Direction, Best Choreography, and Best Original Score.

The Cast and Production Team. The show features the multi-talented cast of Jacob Bernelle, Chris Cannata, Susannah Crowell, Brooke Culbertson, Nicholas Gollihugh, Aidan Linsey, Michelle Malia, Maci McFarlin, Maranda Moody, Buddy Novak, Taylor Rainbolt, Phil Rodriguez, Denver Surgener, Hilary Werthmann, and Wendy Zavaleta. Jeff Hinkle (Hair, Hamlet, A Streetcar Named Desire) directs with Choreography by Rose Mitchell and Musical Direction by Tyler Groft.
