The VORTEX presents The Island of Dr. Moreau: A Fever Dream Steeped in Blood

Adapted, Directed, and Performed by Charles P. Stites

A mysterious man known only as Edwards survives the collision of two ships at sea, and a grisly episode aboard a lifeboat with two desperate murderers, only to find himself in even graver danger - marooned on an island with a mad scientist and the race of monsters he has created. The Island of Dr. Moreau: A Fever Dream Steeped in Blood is an intense, dramatic adventure story, a shared nightmare, and a meditation on the nature of humanity.

This work is loosely adapted from the classic novel by science fiction master H.G. Wells, whose works also include The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds.

The play premiered at Frontera Fest in 2014, and was named one of the year's ten best theatrical productions by the Austin Chronicle. The production later moved to San Francisco where it won the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle award for Best Solo Performance. Stites is thrilled to bring the play to the audiences of The Vortex.

Critics have said of the play:

"Stites performs H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau, and he does it so well that it just about wounds you." - Wayne Allan Brenner, Austin Chronicle

"He (Stites) transformed instantly from one character to another, endowed each with distinctive voice and accent, and radiated intensity . . . one that goes beyond ordinary mimesis and approaches a hypnotic concentration." - Michael Meigs, ctxlivetheatre.com

"It is a story of such intensity and horror that you are gripped from beginning to end." - Harry Duke, forallevents.com

"Stites' effortless transformations make the story and his performance fascinating, disturbing, and at times downright terrifying." - Lacey Cannon Gonzales, broadwayworld.com

Charles P Stites is a longtime veteran of the Austin theatre scene, and has been nominated for nine B. Iden Payne awards. His recent appearances include: Renfield in Dracula (Different Stages), Meninius Agrippa in Coriolanus (Trinity Street Players), Bernie in Sexual Perversity in Chicago (Paladin Theatre Company), Carter in Fat Pig (Theatre En Bloc), and Kerr in Chesapeake (Paladin Theatre Company).

The VORTEX is funded in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts and by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
