Performance Photos by Andy Sharp: THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, Georgetown Palace Theatre,

(performance photos by Andy Sharp)

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee centers on an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents as they vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.  Six spellers enter, but only one speller remains to the end!

Palace Artistic Director Mary Ellen Butler calls this “a zany look at the growing up process” that is not recommended for children or even young teens.  It is recommended, in fact, that parents Google the show and read for content indicators.

Lannie Hilboldt, Director (he also plays Bass in the band), is joined by Courtney Wissinger Eiland as Choreographer; Jonathan Borden as Conductor/Music Director/Pianist; Austin Kimble, Keys II; Paul Baker, Woodwinds; and Rob Fedson, Percussion.  Outstanding actors – many of them familiar to Palace audiences – bring the characters of this production to life!  Wendy Zavaleta, David Sray, Buddy Novak, Martha Hurley, Erik Freisinger, and Katya Welch are longstanding friends of the Palace; whereas William Gilbert, Jordan Marett, Daniel Ponce, and Emma Thoeni are new to the Palace world of theatre!

Get ready for some fun as the six characters in this play – six awkward spelling champions – learn that winning (and losing) isn't everything.  Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor.
