The game tells the story of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) named Thomas who, due to a glitch in programming, has suddenly gained sentience and seeks to escape into the outside world. The programmers, determined to make sure this never happens, develop a series of increasingly complex puzzles that always keep him just one step away from freedom. Along the way, Thomas encounters other AIs who all embody various shapes, sizes and colors as quadrilaterals. Through the use of friendship, collaboration, and sometimes rivalry, the AIs work together to find an escape.  The game is very popular worldwide and has sold more than 700,000 copies to date.
