The memories of two master storytellers show how the spirit of sharing and generosity, especially in times of hardship, brings out the true meaning of fellowship that lives in us at this special time of year.
“A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote & “Christmas Story” by John Henry Faulk. Readings by Michael Howard and Linda Ford
"A Christmas Memory" is a short story by Truman Capote, first published in Mademoiselle magazine in 1956, that reflects on the author's childhood memories of Christmas in rural Alabama twenty years earlier. It is the touching tale of a seven-year-old boy named Buddy and his elderly cousin, Sook, as they share a special bond and engage in holiday traditions and hardships, emphasizing themes of friendship and giving.
John Henry Faulk was a gifted American folklorist, storyteller and former radio show host, known for his influential work in media and his successful lawsuit against the entertainment industry that helped end the Hollywood blacklist. His “Christmas Story” is a nostalgic tale told by a barefoot boy whom the narrator encounters on the road the day after Christmas. The story, originally broadcast in 1974 for the program “Voices in the Wind,” is about two poor Texas families finding joy during the holidays by sharing their first-ever Christmas.
