Papakō: The Journey
by Teatro Vivo
Nov. 06 - Nov. 16
Thursdays-Sundays
From the acclaimed playwrights of Yana Wana’s Legend of the Bluebonnet comes a powerful new Indigenous drama that blends mystery, mythology, and modern-day activism. Papakō: The Journey will perform at East Austin College Prep this November, inviting audiences on a journey that transcends time, land, and legacy.
Prompted by a mysterious message from beyond the grave, teenage cousins Juan and Joseph embark on a harrowing trek across Texas—one that ultimately brings them to the hauntingly sacred White Shaman mural near Comstock. There, amid the cliffside echoes of their ancestors, they cross into a mystical realm and receive a chilling directive: “Return our bodies to Mother Earth.”
Their path leads them into direct conflict with a powerful institution that refuses to release ancient remains, igniting a heartfelt battle between Indigenous tradition and modern resistance to reburial. This unforgettable story shines a spotlight on cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and the spiritual ties that bind generations across centuries.
This moving production honors Native voices and stories that continue to shape the present. With a blend of theatrical storytelling, cultural reverence, and emotional depth, Papakō: The Journey is a must-see event for families, educators, and communities alike.
