To Kill a Mockingbird
by City Theatre Company

Oct. 03 - Oct. 19

In sleepy Alabama, in the midst of the Great Depression, where Scout and her brother, Jem, live with their widowed father, lawyer Atticus Finch, the facade of their seemingly peaceful town begins to crack when a young Black man is accused of a terrible crime. Driven by an unshakeable moral conviction, Atticus defends him in a trial that sends violent waves through the community. Atticus inspires kindness and empathy in his children but is pushed to the limits of these when he resolves to uncover the truth in a town that seems determined to hide it. Timeless, lingering, and searingly relevant, this hard-hitting work explores prejudice, compassion, and the courage to do what is right.

Adapted by Christopher Sergel from Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird is the riveting stage production of the seminal American classic about racial injustice and childhood innocence. Directed by guest director Bridget Farias Gates.

“Before I can live with other folks, I’ve got to live with myself.” – Atticus Finch

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”― Harper Lee

Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, the grade-school classmate of the young Truman Capote, with whom she maintained a friendship well into adulthood. Capote dedicated In Cold Blood to her. The youngest of four children, Harper attended Huntingdon College, studied law at University of Alabama, and spent a year at Oxford University. In the 1950s she moved to New York City where, after working briefly as an airline reservation clerk, she decided to focus exclusively on her writing. She moved into a cold-water flat and began writing To Kill a Mockingbird. In 1957, she submitted the manuscript to the J. B. Lippincott Company and was told that her novel read too much like a series of loosely connected short stories. She spent the next two and a half years revising the book, and in 1960 it was published to widespread acclaim, winning the Pulitzer Prize and thousands of devoted readers.

The production is directed by Bridget Farias Gates. She holds a BFA in Acting and a BFA in Directing from Texas State University. She is the owner and Executive Director of Central Texas Theatre Academy and also the Artistic Director of Chambers Theatre at Inspired Minds Art Center. This marks Bridget's 8th show for City Theatre, including The Little Dog Laughed, Chronicles of Narnia, She Stoops to Conquer, and Much Ado about Nothing.

The production includes the cast of Stephanie Nelson, Rosalind Grace, Dagny Bisett, Harrison Moore, Kevin Gates, Valencia Lee, Roxanne Strubel, Mollie Kirby, Judith Sloan, Kyle Wilke, Noah Robbins, Brian Price, Robert Stevens, Olivia Jamison, Chloe Swindle, Heath Thompson, Ethan Jude Simpson, Patrick Schmidt, Eugene Camren Smith, Kendra Franklin, Leon Clinton, Majesty Trahan, Renee Skoog, Emily Ward, and Ieleen Cerda.
