Student Intern Gives Magik Theatre Production Its Fancy Look

(via Magik Theatre)Audiences at performances of The Magik Theatre’s current production Fancy Nancy: the Musical may have seen the name of Kaitlin Umlang in the program as set and scenic designer, but what they probably don’t know is that the talented technical artist is still in high school: Kaitlin is a senior at Communication Arts High School in the Northside Independent School District, and a technical intern at The Magik Theatre.

Kaitlin has been interning at Magik for the past three years, working with the theatre’s professional technical staff. Although in the past she has assisted with set painting and decorating, Fancy Nancy: the Musical is her first solo set design. She says her inspiration for the set came from the Fancy Nancy picture books. “Robin Preiss Glasser, the illustrator, did such a beautiful job creating the colorful and whimsical world of Fancy Nancy that I wanted to stay as true to the books as possible. The idea is that Fancy’s inviting us, the audience, into her world, so it’s all brighter, bigger, and of course fancier.”

(via Magik Theatre)A lifelong art student, Kaitlin says she is still practicing and learning. She credits her Magik Theatre supervisors and colleagues with helping her develop her design skills. “I have been studying art all my life. I take advanced drawing classes in school to practice my drawing skills. But as far as theatrical design, everything I know I learned from training alongside the amazing technical crew at Magik.”

Asked if she has ever considered a career in front of the audience, Kaitlin seems to think her strength lies in other areas: “Maybe one day I will work up the courage to give acting a try but my real love has been and will always be working backstage and behind the scenes.”

The Magik Theatre extends its mission of nurturing a love and understanding of theatre by educating young professionals so they are prepared to enter any professional theatre career. By joining the theatre’s intern and apprenticeship programs, candidates are provided a well-rounded learning experience that expands their skills in theatre practices.

Kaitlin’s set design may be seen during the run of Fancy Nancy: the Musical, now through April 17, at The Magik Theatre, 420 S. Alamo, San Antonio, Texas 78205. Tickets and more information are available online at www.magiktheatre.org or by calling (210) 227-2751.
