Each year our performing company, Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance (PRFDance) preserves and transmits oral history researched among Island elders who remember a past that has never been written down. Through community theatre featuring live music and dance, our plays give the community a vibrant vehicle to better embrace, learn, and retain history.

On December 3 & 4, 2016, Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance debuted our 14th bilingual play that shared the story of the first Boricua (Puerto Rican) Migration to Hawaii in 1900.  An original script based in oral and documented history, this play honored the brave men, women and children who went to Hawaii in search of a better life after Hurricane San Ciriaco devoured Puerto Rico in 1899.

Recovery from Puerto Rico’s most destructive hurricane in history was not possible in any reasonable timeframe.  In a year’s time, 11 voyages would bring 5000 Boricuas to Hawaii, attracted by three year contracts to work the Hawaii sugar plantations.  Only 100 would ever return; those who remained  never forgot who they were -- Borinkis (of Boricua descent).

This original musical is the 14th bilingual play created by Dr. Ana Maria Tekina-eirú Maynard for PRFDance based in oral and documented history.  This year's play benefited from knowledge and memories shared by Jesus Reyes (Juncos, Puerto Rico), as well as Puerto Ricans living in Hawaii whose families were part of this history: Marian Montalbo and Kathy Marzan Montalbo (Hawai'i), and Clifford Pagan (Maui).
