Unity Theatre in Brenham Reopens Theatre Season

Announced on March 12, 2021:

(via Unity Theatre)Unity Theatre is excited to be back in the business of producing plays and is looking forward to inviting guests safely back into the theatre. With the ramp up of vaccines, there appears to be light at the end of this very long tunnel, and Unity is ready to take some baby steps toward our current “new normal”.

And so, we are thrilled to announce…Coming Soon to the Unity stage is the historical drama (that also includes lots of comedy!), “Ben Butler”, by Richard Strand, playing April 29 – May 16, 2021. Don’t miss this smart and funny discourse on race, protocol and our sense of humanity. The sharply comic play takes place in the middle of the Civil War, 1861 at Virginia’s Union-held Fort Monroe under the command of General Benjamin Butler. When three escaped slaves show up seeking sanctuary, General Butler is faced with an impossible moral dilemma – follow the letter of the law and return the escapees back to the Confederacy, or make a game-changing move that could alter the course of US history. Ben Butler is a Main Stage production being presented with strict limited seating in order to accommodate social distancing guidelines, masks will be required for all persons at the theatre, and safe distancing will be followed at all times by staff, patrons, and crew. Reservations will be available to Circle members on April 5th, to Subscribers on April 12th, and tickets will go on sale to the Public on April 19th. Contact the Box Office for tickets or more information at 979-830-8358.
What about the other shows scheduled this season? The Studio Series production of “The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey” will be moved to the fall of the 2021-2022 Season, and “Barefoot In the Park”, originally scheduled to play on the Main Stage in May, will instead open our new season in September 2021. In its place we will present the intriguing mystery thriller “The Tangled Skirt” by Steve Braunstein, with Unity favorites and married couple - Justin and Crystal O’Brien. This Studio Series production will play for two weeks on the Main Stage, June 17 - 27 and close out this challenging 2020-2021 season. Tickets and reservations will be available in early June.
Subscribers can use any combination of their tickets to see the Main Stage production of “Ben Butler” and the Studio Series production (being performed on the Main Stage) of “The Tangled Skirt”. As promised with the Forever Subscription, any unused 2020-2021 Season Subscription tickets will carry over for your use next season and beyond. Stay tuned for the announcement of the full New 2021-2022 Season soon!
Unity Theatre would like to thank the good folks of Brenham and Washington County for the community’s support throughout this past year. We ask for continued patience and understanding as we emerge from the pandemic and work through the safety precautions required to re-open the theatre in a manner that provides a comfortable and safe environment for all of our patrons, volunteers, staff and crew. It’s been a long wait, but hopefully with care and caution, we can soon be back in business…show business, that is!
