One of the classics of mid-20th century English theatre, Priestley’s daring play takes place in an English industrial city, where an eminently respectable British family is subject to a routine inquiry in connection with the suicide of a young girl. An inspector calls on the family to interrogate them, and during the course of his questioning, each of them is implicated in the girl’s undoing. Before the evening is over, the formerly friendly and close-knit family members reveal themselves to be selfish, self-centered or cowardly – their good humor turning to acid and their fellowship to disdain.



Auditions on August 10 & 11, 2026consist of cold reads.

The cast:

  • Inspector Goole: The enigmatic detective who interrogates the family.
  • Arthur Birling: The pompous, wealthy patriarch and factory owner.
  • Sybil Birling: Arthur's snobbish wife and head of a local charity organization.
  • Sheila Birling: The Birlings' daughter, who undergoes a massive moral awakening during the play.
  • Eric Birling: The Birlings' son, who has a drinking problem and a troubled past.
  • Gerald Croft: A wealthy businessman and Sheila's fiancé.
  • Edna: The Birling family’s maid.

If you love work with real stakes: sharp dialogue, secrets surfacing in real time, and characters who transform before the audience's eyes, then this is a show to be part of. We're looking for bold, committed performers and off-stage collaborators ready to build something electric. ​

Roles
A note on ages:
I care about believable family dynamics, and the parents being of a generation above their adult children. Age ranges are flexible and approximate.

Arthur Birling
A hard-headed, self-made factory owner and social climber, pompous and complacent. Proud of his wealth and status; dismissive of anyone who threatens it.
A generation ahead of his adult children. 
Provincial accent. 

Sybil Birling
Arthur's wife, his social superior, cold and imperious. Rigidly class-conscious and slow to accept any responsibility. 
A generation ahead of her adult children. 
RP accent

Sheila Birling
Their daughter, lively at first, but the character who changes most: perceptive, increasingly conscience-stricken and morally awake by the end.
Young adult, 18 to early 30's
RP accent.

Eric Birling
Their son, awkward and half-shy, a heavy drinker concealing a secret. Emotionally volatile; grows into remorse.
Young adult, 18 - late 20's 
RP accent.

Gerald Croft
Sheila's fiancé, son of a rival aristocratic business family. Charming, well-bred, outwardly respectable, but with his own hidden involvement.
Similar age as Sybil, perhaps a touch older, early 20's to mid 30's.
RP accent. 

Inspector Goole
The mysterious, commanding visitor who drives the play. Grave, deliberate, morally forceful; an enigmatic figure who may be more than they seem. The role anchors the production.
Age hard to place.
British or European accent.

Edna
The Birlings' maid. A modest but useful role; a quiet reminder of the class divide.
Age flexible.
British accent.

No previous experience necessary!
