2022 Season Auditions

 

The Little Mermaid, A Chorus Line, The Color Purple, and White Christmas

(www.woodlawntheatre.org)SIGN UP BEGINS FEBRUARY 11TH, 2022. AUDITIONS TAKE PLACE ON MARCH 19TH AND 26TH.

Auditions are by sign up only. Performers are to sign up for a time slot on either March 19th or 26th, do not sign up for more than one time slot. If all time slots are full, we will do our best to create additional ones. If you need to cancel a time slot please email Alex@woodlawntheatre.org. Video auditions are allowed but not recommended, if you can come in person please do so. Video submissions must be emailed to Chris@woodlawntheatre.org no later than March 20th. If you are feeling sick or have tested positive for Covid please do not come in person and submit a video instead. Masks will be required to be worn while at the theatre. You will only be able to take off your mask during your songs.

Performers are to prepare two contrasting songs, 16-32 bars each. Both songs should not go over 3 minutes total. If your songs go over, you will be cut off. Please bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. No tracked music or acapella singing will be allowed. After a performer is done singing they will be released for the day. If needed, a dance callback will happen for each show. If you have a resume and headshot, please bring it with you. If you do not have a headshot, any picture of you would be helpful for our teams. Please arrive early to fill out paperwork. You will be able to specify what shows you want to be considered for when you fill out our paperwork. 

Individuals of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to audition. Auditions are only for ages 16 and up. Performers 18 and up receive a small stipend for being in the shows. To be considered for A Chorus Line you must be 18 or over. All youth roles in the season will be chosen from the Woodlawn Academy at a later date.  Please note we are a community theater and do not work with Equity contracts at this time.

Covid protocols for rehearsals of casts:

We strongly recommend all cast members be vaccinated and boosted. If not, we recommend you get tested once a week during the rehearsal process and for performance weekends. Masks will be worn throughout the rehearsal process. We continue to monitor cases in our community. As it currently stands, masks will not be worn for the shows and performers will be able to start rehearsing without a mask once we start running the shows on stage. However, that may change if needed.

DISNEY’S THE LITTLE MERMAID

Performances: June 17- July 10 (Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm) added shows July 7 at 7 pm and June 25th at 2 pm. Rehearsals begin May 1st.

Character Breakdown

ARIEL (Female, any ethnicity, age 18 to 25) A mermaid and King Triton's youngest daughter. She is obsessed with everything about the human world, and dreams of becoming a part of life above the water. Hardheaded, naive, and emotional, but also kind hearted.  Vocal range top: Gb5 Vocal range bottom: Ab3

PRINCE ERIC (Male, any ethnicity, age 20 to 30) A human monarch who has no interest in taking the crown. A handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more.  Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: B2

GRIMSBY (Male, any ethnicity, age 40-60) Prince Eric's British guardian. Droll, stuffy, and constantly urging Eric towards his royal duties, specifically marriage. Vocal range top: C4 Vocal range bottom: C3

FLOUNDER (Any gender identity, any ethnicity age 12 to 18 ) A fish and smitten with Ariel, her best friend. Rambunctious but cautious, fearful of the dangers that lurk in and above the water. Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: A2. 

Could possibly be played by an Academy student.

SCUTTLE (Any gender identity, any ethnicity, age 25 to 40) A disheveled seagull and expert in human artifacts. Loudmouthed, optimistic, and a bit ignorant, despite his supposed expertise. Vocal range top: G4 Vocal range bottom: C3

KING TRITON (Male, any ethnicity, age 35 to 45) King of the Sea and Ariel's father. Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature lurks a harried single father who will do anything to protect his daughters. The death of his wife has also given him an irrational fear of humans. SEBASTIAN (Any gender identity, Black, age 30 to 45) A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is constantly distraught from keeping after Ariel. Despite his paranoia, he can't bring himself to stand in Ariel's way. Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: Bb2

FLOTSAM (Any gender identity, any ethnicity, age 18 to 40) An eel and one of Ursula's lackeys. Oily and spineless, he will say anything you want or need to hear. Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: E3

JETSAM (Any gender identity, any ethnicity, age 18 to 40) An eel and one of Ursula's lackeys. Oily and spineless, he will say anything you want or need to hear.  Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: B2

URSULA (Any gender identity, any ethnicity, age 35 to 45) The banished Sea Witch and sister of King Triton. Supposedly spurned at childhood, she will use whatever method necessary to steal the kingdom and claim it as her own. Malevolent, calculating, and deceptive. CHEF LOUIS (Male, any ethnicity,  age 30 to 50) The French palace chef, diabolical and violent. A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades, seafood in particular. Vocal range top: A4 Vocal range bottom: Bb2

ZACH (Male, any ethnicity, mid 30s – early 40s) Dynamic and charismatic director/choreographer of a Broadway show. Driven and at times coldly manipulative. Actor who dances. 

LARRY (Male, any ethnicity, late 20s – mid 30s) Zach’s assistant. Masculine and efficient. An accomplished dancer. 

MIKE (Male, any ethnicity, mid 20s) Accomplished Italian American dancer who sings well. Athletic and masculine with a street- wise charm. Tenor. Acrobatics is a plus. 

RICHIE (Male, Black, mid 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. Extremely energetic. Tenor. Flexibility and basic acrobatic skills are a plus. 

PAUL (Male, Latin, mid 20s – 30s) Accomplished actor who dances well. Slight and sensitive with a natural grace. Tenor.

MARK (Male, any ethnicity, late teens – early 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. The youngest male on the line. Boyish and likable. Tenor.

GREG (Male, any ethnicity, late 20s – early 30s) Accomplished dancer who sings. Highly sophisticated, wry and intelligent with a decidedly wicked wit. Out and proud. Baritone.

BOBBY (male, any ethnicity, mid – late 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. He has a quirky almost outrageous comedic sense, yet, remains immensely likable. Baritone.

AL (Male, any ethnicity, mid – late 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. Tough, street-wise and overtly masculine. Married to Kristine. Baritone.

CASSIE (Female, any ethnicity, early – mid 30s) Dynamic “Star” dancer who sings extremely well. Ex-lover of Zach seeking to restart her career. Strong and charismatic actress. Soprano. 

SHEILA (Female, any ethnicity, early – Mid 30s) Accomplished actress who dances well. Beautiful showgirl with a killer body and an even more killer wit. Alto. 

VAL (Female, any ethnicity, mid – late 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. Smart, sassy, and immensely sure of herself with a killer body; yet the girl next door. Mezzo.

DIANA (Female, Latin, mid – late 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. Warm, energetic, and extremely likable. Mezzo. 

JUDY (Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. Energetic, quirky, and decidedly offbeat. Prefer 5’7 and up. Soprano.  

BEBE (Female, any ethnicity, mid – late 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings well. Natural and unaffected. Mezzo. 

KRISTINE (Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s) Accomplished dancer/actress who sings. Married to Al. Quirky, comedic sensibility. Exhibits an extreme amount of nervous energy. Alto. 

MAGGIE (Female, any ethnicity, mid 20s) Accomplished dancer who sings very well. Likable girl next door; shy and sensitive. Soprano with a solid mix/belt to E. 

DON (Male, any ethnicity, late 20’s) Ladies’ man, married, and into cars, money, and women. Very sure of himself. All American guy. Cocky because he has worked with Zach before. From Kansas City.  Baritone.

CONNIE (Female, AAPI, 20’s) Experienced dancer. Married. Petite. A bit of a mother hen with a great sense of humor. Born in Chinatown. Believably is 4’10”. Alto.

THE CUT  DANCERS ( All genders & ethnicities, age 18-38) Perform entire opening sequence until cut. Some may be asked to understudy. Entire ensemble will be off stage singers throughout the show.

 

THE COLOR PURPLE

Performances: Sep 30 -Oct 23 (Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm).  Rehearsals begin Aug. 14th.

Character Ethnicity: Black for all roles

CELIE (Female, 20s-early 30s) Drives the story. Vulnerable, spirited, introverted, mischievous, seemingly passive but really not, has a deep, hard soul, believes that she is ugly, has a sense of humor which is sometimes wicked. She is an observer. Needs a great belt singing voice with lots of soul.

SHUG (Female, 30s-40s) A popular singer, we meet her at death’s door. Attractive, confident, dynamic, powerful, irresistible, but has a frailty, like a wounded animal. Her vulnerability is shocking later on. She is loved by both Celie and Mister. Needs a knockout, Bessie Smith-style, bluesy singing voice.

MISTER (Male, 30s-40s. Also known as ALBERT) Like Celie, a deep well. Handsome, big, masculine, strong presence, dominating, capable of brutal behavior but also a victim in his own way. Gets his power for free. Married to Celie, he abuses her. He is in love with Shug. He transforms into a kind man by the end of the story. Needs a great singing voice.

SOFIA (Female, 30s) Powerful warrior woman. Physically bigger and beautiful. Comfortable being large, great sense of humor, touching, vulnerable. Married to Harpo, she does not let anyone mistreat her. Needs comic chops. Needs a great belt singing voice.

HARPO (Male, 20s) Mister’s vulnerable, confused, good-hearted son. Represents the new generation. He marries the independent Sofia. He spends much time trying to get Sofia to obey him the way Celie obeys his father, but he is unsuccessful, as Sofia is considerably stronger than he is. Harpo eventually establishes a jukejoint in his first house and becomes Squeak’s lover. Later, he and Sofia reconcile. Through his love of Sofia, he learns how to love a woman. Needs a great tenor singing voice.

NETTIE (Female, 20s) Celie’s younger sister. Attractive, adventuresome, feisty spirit, maternal, more educated and knowledgeable than Celie. She has a powerful bond with Celie. Forced by Mister to leave Celie, she starts a new life in Africa. Needs a great belt singing voice with African influence.

SQUEAK ( Female, 20s) Harpo’s lover after Sofia leaves him. Although she is mistreated, she eventually undergoes a transformation, demanding to be called by her actual name, Mary Agnes, and starting a new life. She is of mixed ancestry. Attractive, sassy, fiery, strong-willed, unafraid to take anybody on, has a caring heart. Needs comic chops. Needs a great singing voice with belt and soprano capability.

ADULT SINGERS (Males and females, 20s – 50s). All types and singing ranges. Need fantastic singing voices and dynamic personalities. To play various roles in the ensemble. The ensemble includes a trio known as Church Ladies, busybody types who are featured throughout the show.

 

WHITE CHRISTMAS

Performances: Nov 25 - Dec 23 (Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm) added shows Dec 21, 22, 23 at 7 pm.

BOB WALLACE (Male, mid 30’s to early 40’s) A major singing star, Bob is the guiding force behind the song and dance team of Wallace and Davis. He wears his fame easily, but has some trouble with social and romantic interactions. Despite occasional gruffness, he is a deeply kind and principled man who is searching for true love. Excellent singer with a crooning style who moves very well. Tap and Jazz. Baritone.

PHIL DAVID (Male, mid 30’s to early 40‘s) The fun-loving song-and-dance partner of the team Wallace and Davis. An irrepressible clown, operator, and incorrigible ladies’ man who is determined to see his friend happy, even if it requires scheming and outright deception. He has a boyish charm and sex appeal. Strong ballroom, jazz and tap-dancing needed. Baritone-tenor.

BETTY HAYNES (Female, mid-20’s to late 30’s) Sensible, responsible half of the Haynes sisters act. Classic elegance. Destined to be a star, but hesitant to take the spotlight. Devoted to her sister. Hides a yearning for true love under a protective shell. Female singer of quiet beauty and charm with a rich chest mix and soprano extension. Must move well.

JUDY HAYNES (Female, mid-20’s to mid 30’s) Younger, more ambitious and slightly scheming other sister. Wholesome and adorable, sexy and flirty. Strong jazz and tap dancer. Strong singer with a chest mix.

GENERAL HENRY WAVERLY (Male, late 50’s to mid 60’s) Retired Army general with a curmudgeonly military exterior, adjusting to retired life in post WWII America. Precise and orderly, struggling to run the Inn in Vermont. A man of integrity. Underneath a warm compassionate man in need of family and love. With the exception of one line, can be a non-singing role.

MARTHA WATSON (Female, late 40’s to mid-60’s) Once a Broadway star, now the General’s housekeeper. The true force behind running the Inn. Very dry wit and frank with a wisecracking sense of humor. Big hearted, but unsentimental. Irrepressible meddler, believing she acts on everyone’s best behalf.  Strong singer and mover, Broadway belter.

SUSAN WAVERLY  (Female, young girl 9 to 12 to play 9 years old) The General’s granddaughter. Lovable and outgoing. A bit precocious, but wise beyond her years. Gets bitten by the stage bug and is great at it. Excellent belt voice, must move very well. This role will be cast from our Academy at a later date.

RALPH SHELDRAKE (Male, mid 30’s to early 40’s) Jokester Army buddy of Bob and Phil’s, now a major television executive. Fast talking, loud, brash New York professional with a good head on his shoulders.

RITA AND RHONDA (Female, mid 20’s to early 30’s) Bob and Phil’s two star chorus showgirls. Brash, sexy and fun. Perhaps not the brightest.

EZEKIEL FOSTER (Male, mid 40’s to late 50’s) Practical, the ultimate laid back New Englander. A man of few words. Caretaker at the Inn. Takes life at a very, very leisurely pace.

MIKE (Male, mid 20’s to late 30’s) Bob and Phil’s Stage Manager. Can be overly dramatic and often hysterical, but gets the job done. Works to attempt a sense of control and order for the company. Doubles as Mr. Snoring Man, Winter Tourist.

TESSIE (Female, late 20’s to 30’s) Young Character woman to play Bob and Phil’s secretary, also plays Head Seamstress and Mrs. Snoring Man, winter tourist. Mezzo-soprano, belter.

MALE AND FEMALE DANCERS (Early 20’s to mid 30’s) to play assorted speaking roles as well as being a strong singing ensemble. Strong in Ballroom, Jazz and Tap. Dance style is 1950’s Hollywood movie musical style.
